Abstract
Acute poisoning is an urgent medical problem, and is usually caused by a self-administered overdose of drugs. Of the 130 000 cases of self-poisoning each year, more than 3000 result in death. Recent research and development in the pharmaceutical industry has produced new sleeping tablets and antidepressant drugs with an emphasis on safety, and these are less likely to cause death in an overdose. An attempt has been made to reduce the risk of children poisoning themselves, by producing tablet bottles with safety tops fitted. Despite this, poisoning in children remains a frequent problem.
