Abstract
In the preparation of semi-solid products for application to the skin it is not too difficult to arrange the formulation to give particular types of rheological behaviour. This is achieved by variation of the components so that plasticity, pseudoplasticity and thixotropy may be obtained in varying degrees. It is also relatively easy to reproduce the rheological characteristics of a successful product firstly by interpreting and then by producing a facsimile of the formulation. The real problem to the formulator is to achieve a product that has the same ‘skin feel’, and hence the same acceptability, to the user.
