Abstract
The principal objectives of the formulator of topical medicinal products are to design a dosage form which is both chemically and physically stable and is cosmetically acceptable. In addition, there is the need to ensure that the vehicle provides optimal delivery of the drug to the target tissues. Effective therapy will only be achieved if the various interactions and actions resulting post-application of the dosage form to the skin surface occur in a controlled manner. Drug release, penetration and target activity are dependent on the interactions occurring between drug, vehicle and skin. Vehicle-drug interactions will determine the drug release profile, whilst vehicle-skin interactions can modulate the penetration phase.
