Abstract
To consider trends in hepatology and to risk a look into the future of science is a dangerous task. Futurology backed by dubious authority has been known to inhibit rather than to foster scientific progress. However, we meet here to pay homage to a colleague who very early recognized a trend among hepa-tologists from differing disciplines — the desire to meet every year and exchange knowledge and ideas — and who was extremely successful in firmly establishing this trend. Thus, it may be appropriate to look at recent developments and to try to foresee future trends.
