Abstract

Although the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) has increased in many countries, our knowledge about the immunobiology of the etiologic agents is inadequate to develop effective vaccines and minimize the incidence of these infections. Because most of the etiologic agents of STDs are pathogenic only for humans, experimental infectivity studies are limited. Why these organisms infect only humans and not other vertebrates is not known, but it is possible to speculate on the microbial factors that are involved.
