Seizure Disorders

  • Chapter

Abstract

Benzodiazepines are used for treatment of seizures in three ways: (1) parenterally in the treatment of status epilepticus, (2) in chronic maintenance for seizure prophylaxis and (3) during alcohol withdrawal, for prevention of the withdrawal syndrome, which includes grand mal seizures. The anticonvulsant properties vary between the different benzodiazepine analogs. Some benzodiazepines are marketed with the primary indication of treating seizure disorders.
