Abstract
This can be distressing for the patient and socially unacceptable. A coughing child ‘disrupts the class’; a bank clerk ‘upsets’ the customers; in a canteen attendant it is ‘unhygienic’; coughing at night keeps the other partner awake. It is the most frequent of the respiratory symptoms leading the patient to seek help.
