Abstract
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) has attracted widespread publicity since its recent discovery. This attention seems far out of proportion to the several hundred cases reported nationwide over the past few years. Such excess publicity may perhaps be attributed to the initial mysteriousness of the illness, its severity, and its recent association with specific brands of internal sanitary tampons. The definition of TSS, its history, epidemiology, clinical presentation, and etiology will be discussed in this chapter.
