Abstract

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a major health problem: 1–2% of sexually active women acquire PID annually (Weström, 1980), and 20% of these women subsequently develop dysfunction of the fallopian tubes (infertility, increased risk for ectopic pregnancy) or chronic pelvic pain (Weström, 1975).
