Abstract

Although the concept of infection has long been known, the infectious nature of puerperal fever remained unrecognized until relatively recent times. This late recognition may result from the fact that the care of gravidas and parturients traditionally was relegated to uneducated midwives, while the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of other diseases were studied by educated physicians (Baeder, 1981). It is ironic that the contagious nature of some diseases that are not particularly easily transferred, such as leprosy, had been recognized since ancient times, while the infectious nature of childbed fever was not recognized until the turn of the century.
