Types of ancient semi-natural woodland
The descriptions of stand groups and types are presented as a catalogue of more-or-less standardised accounts. Stand groups are defined and described in terms of their composition, distribution, edaphic range, structure and management. The basis of their division into stand groups is explained, and their phytosociological relationships and some published descriptions of them are briefly mentioned. Stand types and sub-types are similarly described, but with a greater emphasis on detail. A brief account of the vascular flora associated with each type and sub-type is given by mentioning the characteristic dominants and listing these species which have been recorded in more than 20% of the recorded samples. (Those which were recorded in more than 60% of the samples are marked with an asterisk.)
