The primaeval forests were not all cleared away. The small fragments which survived into historical times mostly ceased to be ‘waste’ ground ripe for exploitation and clearance, and eventually they became valuable assets managed as coppice or wood-pasture. Despite continued clearance and changes in management, many of these woods — the direct descendants of primaeval forest — survive today.
