Abstract

At the outset, investigations into the properties of hydrocarbons revealed the fact that, although they were extremely inert to the usual reagents employed in organic chemistry, they were, nevertheless, comparatively easily oxidized by air or oxygen. Although eminent scientists such as Faraday [1] and Berthelot [2] speculated on the nature of the chemical processes involved in pyrolysis and combustion, the subject was neither particularly fruitful nor rewarding. During the nineteenth century it was believed that, when hydrocarbons burned, the hydrogen they contained was preferentially oxidized and soot was formed. About this time, an alternative mechanism was proposed [3] which suggested that burning occurred in stages which involved the formation of unstable hydroxylated molecules, which then decomposed fairly rapidly to give simple stable intermediate products. This idea subsequently reappeared in the form of the theory associated with the name of W. A. Bone.
