Mössbauer Spectroscopy in Mineral Chemistry

Mössbauer spectroscopy is a technique, applicable virtually only to solid materials, that yields information about the environment of particular nuclei in a solid. It is, unfortunately, limited in its application to a restricted number of elements but is especially favourable for iron where the less abundant57Fe gives rise to the spectra. Because of the widespread occurrence of iron in minerals Mössbauer spectroscopy has found a variety of applications in mineral chemistry. Although the nuclear properties of tin, iodine, tellurium, gold, iridium and several other elements permit Mössbauer spectroscopic studies, practically all the applications to mineral chemistry so far reported refer to studies of the environment of iron nuclei.
