Abstract

The bootstrap is one of several resampling methods that have been developed recently by statisticians. Bradley Efron (1982, pp. 2–3), who developed the bootstrap, notes that these methods “are prodigious computational spendthrifts.… An important theme…is the substitution of computational power for theoretical analysis. The payoff…is freedom from the constraints of traditional parametric theory, with its over-reliance on a small set of standard models for which theoretical solutions are available.…
