Summary
PCBs could be an hindrance for the agricultural use of municipal sewage sludges. In some cases PCBs from sewage sludges can be at the origin of the extreme biomagnification of these pollutants in agroecosysterns. A systematic control of PCBs content of sewage sludges is needed. The Program COST 68 ter of the European Communities had pro-moved an intercomparison project to collect the experiences of European laboratories involved in PCBs-detemrination in sewage sludges and to identify the major error sources of this analysis. The samples submited to analysis were a set of pure PCBs congeners, a mixture of comercial PCBs, cleaned and rough extracts from sludges and a dried sewage sludge powder. The results obtained show that improvements are necessary, mainly in the strictness of the handling of the samples and the identification of the most acceptable extraction method, to reach an acceptable coherence between the results of different laboratories.
