Cadmium and Lead in the Food Web of a Forest Ecosystem

  • Chapter
Atmospheric Pollutants in Forest Areas

Abstract

In a forested ecosystem in the Rhine-Main region, active and passive monitoring was carried out to investigate the immission load with cadmium and lead in different compartments of the system. Though the deposition during the research period was only slight, high amounts of lead were found in the organic topsoil. The dispersal of Cd and Pb in the food web was studied by analysing 19 different animal species. Cadmium showed a higher mobility in food chains than lead.
