Abstract
The absolute rate constants for the reactions of variety of radicals with a number of sulfonyl halides have been measured in solution by using laser flash photolysis techniques. The reactivities cover a wide range, e.g., the rate constants for the reaction of n-butyl, phenyl and triethylsilyl radicals with α-toluenesulfonyl chloride are 1.3x106, 1.0x108, and 5.7x109 M−1s−1 respectively at 298K. A comparison of the Arrhenius parameters determined for a few representative substrates suggests the involvement of charge-transfer interactions in these reactions. Sulfonyl radicals, RSO2·, show a weak absorption band with a maximum around 340nm. Evidences are presented suggesting that such a transition places a nonbonding oxygen electron in the single occupied molecular orbital. Additional kinetic data are also given for the unimolecular and bimolecular decay of sulfonyl radicals.
