Constraints on the Ages of Distant Giant Elliptical Radio Galaxies

  • Chapter
Galaxy Distances and Deviations from Universal Expansion

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 180))

Abstract

The oldest observed ages of elliptical galaxies and globular clusters form a logical lower limit to the age of the Universe. To find the earliest possible formation epoch of elliptical galaxies one needs to study candidates at high redshift, which have very red colors and whose spectra consist entirely of starlight. To derive ages from observed spectra or colors one must first understand the stellar populations that compose the gE spectrum, their evolutionary tracks in the HR diagram and the resulting spectral evolution of the entire stellar population with cosmic time.
