Abstract

The development of new photometric techniques has permitted accurate measurements of the stellar main sequences in the Magellanic Clouds. Reasonable choices of the relevant parameters (i.e., reddening and abundances) have led to a “short” distance modulus, (m-M)o = 18.2, for the Large Cloud. A consistent short value for the distance is derived from ZAMS fits, isochrone fits from the Yale and VandenBerg models, and comparisons with Galactic clusters. The sources of random and systematic error are briefly discussed, and the effects due to convective overshoot are estimated. The possibility of extending this technique to other galaxies is mentioned.
