Electrical Double Layers at Interfaces between Colloidal Materials and Ionic Solutions

Abstract

The study of electrical double layers plays a central role in colloid chemistry, because their occurrence is usually responsible for the stability of colloidal systems.

For two types of reversible systems, AgI and solid oxides, it is described how the relation between surface charge density and composition of the solution is established. It appears that many qualitative similarities exist with results obtained for the polarizable Hg/electrolyte solution interface.

Current models for the interpretation of experimental results are described. Since the potential determining ions Ag+ and I- in principle can reside anywhere within the solid AgI, but the charge of the oxides is strictly located at their surfaces, the models for the two representatives are rather different.
