Abstract

In view of the light shed by IRAS on dark matter one wonders what the IRAS data add to our knowledge of carbon-rich dust. As the main factory of this dust carbon stars deserve a thorough study. In this paper we report on observations of cool carbon stars between 7 and 120 µm obtained by IRAS. Cool carbon stars populate the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. In section 2 we describe the sample investigated and report on the data available in the IRAS databases. In section 3 we discuss the IRAS broad-band photometry of the carbon stars in our sample. The LRS spectra are discussed in section 4. Section 5 contains some concluding remarks. A more detailed study will be published elsewhere (Willems and de Jong 1985).
