Abstract
The southern hemisphere ocean is characterized by strong westerly winds and immense waves. These winds and waves are the result of the family of cyclones along the polar front. The region poleward of the polar front has much calmer seas, but aerosol production at this relatively calm sea surface is sufficient to produce an enhanced aerosol concentration in the lower kilometer of the atmosphere, around the periphery of the Antarctic continent.
