Summary
GC/MS is one of the most widely used analytical techniques for identifying organic micropollutants in water. Identification is obtained by comparing the produced spectra with those of reference collections. Commercial collections which contain several tens of thousands of spec tra and which include may products outside our area of interest are quite difficult to use effectively. Identifying is greatly simplified if a specific collection is used. One of the objectives of the COST projects 64B,64B bis and 641 was to compile a collection of mass spectra of organic compounds likely to be found in water. The 2000 spectra of the COST collection come mainly form laboratories working for the COST projects. The mass spectra are collected, verified and corrected if possible, and then converted to standardised tables, combined in sections of 100 units and distributed to participating countries. We have also compiled and Index which contains the main characteristics of the mass spectral data. This Index, not only provides a thorough list of the contents of the spectra collection, but it is also a means, in many cases, of identifying the organic pollutants.
