Summary
A two-year control of the water from four ponds in two orchards regularly treated with triesters of phosphorothioic and -dithioic acids showed, during and immediately after the spraying season, a considerable increase in the concentration of dialkyl phosphorothioates and phosphorodithioates. Intact organophosphorous pesticides were also determined in some of the analysed water samples showing that the compounds were not completely degraded before reaching the pond water by leaching and washover of the contaminated soil. The degradation rate of phosphorodithioic acid triesters to more stable specific diesters in the pond water — related silt model systems and translocation of parent compounds and arising degradation products from contaminated silt to the water was dependent on the physical and chemical properties of the pesticide as well as on the characteristics of the water and silt.
