Mixtures of Hydrophobic Chemicals in Aqueous Environments: Aqueous Solubility and Bioconcentration by Fish of Aroclor 1254

  • Conference paper
Organic Micropollutants in the Aquatic Environment

Summary

The aqueous concentrations of individual PCB congeners are influenced significantly by the presence of co-solutes. For saturated Aroclor 1254 solutions it was found that almost all aqueous concentrations of PCB components were below the saturation levels of the individual congeners.

The relative PCB mixture composition in water closely resembled the original Aroclor 1254 composition. In addition, the relative composition of PCB congeners in water was almost independent of the experimental temperatures. The solubility of Aroclor 1254 at 22°C was 37 μg/l and increased to 119 μg/l at 65°C.

In addition it was found that all congeners of the Aroclor 1254 mixture were accumulated by fish. The calculated uptake rate constants were in excellent agreement with values found for individual congeners in previous studies. That however, after prolonged exposure as well as after elimination, variations in the relative PCB mixture composition in fish are found, must be explained by the observed differences in elimination rate constants between the various PCB congeners. This is because no significant differences in uptake rates constants between the various PCB congeners are found.
