The “Lucdeme” Program in the Southeast of Spain to Combat Desertification in the Mediterranean Region

Summary

The National Institute for the Conservation of Nature (Ministry of Agriculture of Spain) has established the LUCDEME program (Lucha contra la Desertificación en el Mediterráneo = Desertification control in the Mediterranea) in the southeastern area of Spain (30.000 Km2) where the most eroded lands and desertificated areas of the country are located. The main objectives of this project are: a) to achieve a better understanding of the desertification process, causes and effects, b) to improve applied technologies to combat desertification: past and present activities in the area, design of new technologies, c) education, training and extension in the field of desertification.

Several universities, national institutes and other national and regional bodies are involved in this program, the contribution of wich will substantially help to improve the understanding of the problems involved and to design new approaches for their solution.
