Abstract

Radiolytic methods have been employed to prepare highly stable Pt hydrosols of low polydispersity, supported on poly-N- methylolacrylamide (PNMAM) as well to form Pt clusters embedded within nylon-grafted-acrylamide (Ny-g-AM) membranes. The metal hydrosols and the Pt bearing polymeric foils were used to catalyze visible-light induced H2 generation from water. The mechanistic features of the radiolytically-induced reduction of Pt(IV) to Pt(O) and of the concurrent polymerization processes occurring in aqueous solutions of H2PtCl6 in the presence of NMAM are discussed. The relatively high catalytic effectiveness of the Pt bearing Ny-g-Am recoverable membranes is ascribed to the accumulation of ions within the aqueous domain of the metal bearing polymeric grids. The catalytic performance of Pt sols and Pt bearing membranes is compared with that of analogous radlolytically prepared Pd, 0s and Ru systems. Some physical characteristics of the Pt catalytic systems are presented.
