Abstract
There is generally sufficient information to allow the prescription of waste disposal strategies that will cause least environmental damage, but what may be technically the preferred option must be balanced against financial cost and public reaction. Marine disposal of wastes is increasingly viewed with public disfavour, though the public is rarely informed about the financial and environmental costs of the alternative disposal routes. The final decision between disposal options for various wastes is essentially political, not scientific. The general public deserves to be more comprehensively informed about the various options for disposal of a waste.
