Abstract
The present work sets itself a similar task to that confronted in my Mechanics.1 It aims to give a critical epistemological elucidation of the foundations of the theory of heat, to lay out for inspection the facts that influenced the formation of the relevant concepts, and to show why and to what extent the former are to be understood in the light of the latter. That such a point of view is applicable in this area as well as in others has been indicated in previous works of mine.2
