Abstract

The term symbolic dynamics has been used by Guckenheimer [1] to refer to properties of maps on an interval and their relation to random processes. We find this term to be quite descriptive of the manner in which points are moved within and between subintervals of the unit interval by the action of repeated composition (generation of iterates) of a trapezoidal map; hence, its use in the title.
