Abstract
We have developed a Fabry-Perot Interferometric Stellar Oscillation Spectrometer (FP-ISOS) to measure the radial velocity curves of ultra short-period variable stars and to search for solar-type oscillations in stars. The Fabry-Perot etalon is servo-stabilised and the instrument operates under full microprocessor control.
Sensitivity to radial velocity is limited ultimately by electronic noise in the servo-control system. For an etalon of 100 micron spacing (resolving power ~12000 in the mid-visible) a noise limited sensitivity of 1ms−1 requires an integration time of approximately 30 minutes.
The instrument has been used at the 1.5m IRFC (Tenerife) and on the 1.9m SAAO telescope (Sutherland), A photon shot noise limited sensitivity of a few metres per second was achieved on bright stars. On the basis of these observations we expect to achieve a sensitivity of 1ms−1 on mv = 0 stars in ~30 hours using a 4m telescope.
