Abstract
Ray chaos in stars, in the asymptotic formalism of geometric acoustics, is shown to arise under perturbations breaking the spherical symmetry of the star. If mild enough, ray chaos merely induces a random scatter of the actual eigenfrequencies of the perturbed star around the standard asymptotic frequencies ω ∝ (n + 1/2ℓ + ϕ) of the radially symmetric model. The statistical properties of this intrinsic scatter are found to differ from the statistics of a scatter due to observational noise.
