Abstract
This paper deals in a critical way with various ways of determining the present rate of star formation and the history of star formation in galaxies, with emphasis on quantitative aspects and on irregular galaxies. Irregular galaxies are apparently the simplest systems where active star formation is presently occuring, and one may hope that understanding them will help to understand the more complex spiral galaxies. As to elliptical galaxies, they are mainly fossils of a past evolution and they will not be discussed here, as well as lenticular galaxies.
