Abstract
Population synthesis models are presented for the galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A), with the main emphasis being placed on deriving epochs of star formation in this disturbed and possibly merged system. IRAS and radio results indicate that the nucleus of this dusty galaxy is optically obscured, and that the observed optical light is emitted along a line of sight which becomes opaque about 10 arcsec in front of the nucleus. The star formation history qualitatively indicates extended periods or recurrent bursts of star formation, with strong current star formation as well. The detailed synthesis results depend on the internal reddening, and results are tabulated for a range of reddenings encompassing the best estimate of E(B-V) = 0.13 mag.
