Abstract

Central regions of galaxies are seen as the product of a random agglomeration of clouds. The resulting distribution of angular momentum is a Maxwellian one. Small angular momentum is a necessary condition for compact cores. For a given mass in virial equilibrium, a small angular momentum means a fast rotation velocity. We assume the broad line width to be caused mainly by rotation.

A relation between the relative frequency and the angular momentum contrast of the central region is given (relative with respect to all galaxies of the same luminosity). The data for Seyfert 1 galaxies are not in conflict with this relation. The application to quasars seems possible.
