Abstract

In the last decade or so, a revival of vacuum ultraviolet and X-ray spectroscopy as tools for studying the electronic properties of solids has been facilitated by the availability of synchrotron radiation sources and by the improvement of the detection techniques. Several comprehensive reviews of the relevant advances in this field have been already provided [1–5]. The strong interest in the fundamental properties of the low-dimensional structures is well documented by the previous experimental papers appeared in this series. In particular, the optical properties of the layered compounds from the infrared to the near ultraviolet have been reported by Evans [6] and by Bordas [7], and are up to date approximately to 1975. Since then, a wealth of reflectivity and absorption measurements from the vacuum ultraviolet to the X-ray region has appeared and require a critical review.
