Abstract
The seismically active Alma Ata region is entirely contained within the North Tien Shan. In the north, at latitude 45 °N, it is bounded by the Dzhungar Alatau mountain system with its spurs, while in the west the boundary runs from the city of Tokmak to the mouth of the river Kurty, the boundary in the south being the Kyungei-Ala-Too range and the north coast of Lake Issyk Kul’, while finally in the east it is bounded by the basin of the river Charyn. The central part of the region is occupied by the ridge of the Transili Alatau, whose axial part extends to the east in a northeasterly direction and attains its greatest height (5000 m) in the Talgar peak.
