Abstract

The Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary in the sediments of the Mediterranean Sea deep-water basins is marked by the appearance of Globorotalia truncatulinoides and by the disappearance of discoasters (Cita et al., 1973); it is about 1.8 x 10 years BP, based on palaeomagnetic data (Ryan and Flood, 1973; Ryan, 1973). Continuous Quaternary sections can be divided into 3 biozones at Sites 132 and 125, based on the coccolithophorides (Stradner, 1973): (1) Emiliania huxleyi. (0 — 0.58 x 106 years); (2) Gephyrocapsa oceanica (0.58 — 1.03 x 106 years); (3) Pseudoemiliania lacunosa (1.03 — 1.85 x 106 years).
