Abstract
This chapter serves as an informal introduction to the models to be presented in the following chapters and compares the approach followed here to that of other authors. The main emphasis of this chapter is on modelling problems and the approaches proposed by various investigators, rather than on the technical analysis of the models to be discussed. Also, we shall not strive for completeness in the discussion of the development of the neoclassical programme, but concentrate on those elements that seem relevant to the issues that we shall tackle here. This implies in particular that we shall only in passing comment on important issues like uncertainty, inventory formation, or financing.
