Summary
As compared with conventional materials obtained in their equilibrium state, typical materials produced by rapid solidification differ both in terms of chemical composition and atomic arrangement. Among the novel magnetic or superconducting properties of these new materials, some are clearly related to composition, others are directly connected to structure; while in some cases, the predominant effect (structure or alloying) is not clearly identified. In addition, RS materials can be obtained in a wide variety of structural conditions ranging through purely amorphous alloys or amorphous alloys with various amount of crystalline precipitates to meta- stable crystalline compounds with various microstructures, and, in between, some materials the structure of which is not properly crystalline nor amorphous (ultrafine particles, "nanocrystals"..). These different aspects of composition and structure were discussed along with a schematic review of the magnetic and superconducting properties of RS materials.
