Abstract
In cognitive psychology, the concept of energy has been employed largely metaphorically to prefer to the capacity for doing mental work. Interesting possibilities for linking the energetic concepts of information processing models to the biophysical processes of energy metabolism arise from studies of regional variations in brain blood flow and metabolism during mental work (eg Roland & Friburg, 1985). However, controversy persists regarding the extent to which changes in the rate of information processing are related to metabolic rates in implicated brain structures (see Van den Berg, this volume).
