Abstract

Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), an indicator for the presence of viruses in plants, can be isolated rapidly by simple methods from small tissue weights from multiple greenhouse and field collected samples using relatively simple laboratory equipment. The number, size, intensity and complexity of dsRNA detected by gel electrophoresis are distinctive and consistent for different virus groups and can aid in the diagnosis of a virus to group, member and even strain. Techniques for the isolation, detection, analysis and reagent use of dsRNAs from plants infected with various specific viruses and virus-like agents will be presented.
