Abstract

A “sputter cone” is a general name given to a class of surface topographies formed on surfaces undergoing energetic ion bombardment. Sputter cones are related to ridges, ledges, pits and craters, as well as rather complicated winding or almost liquid-like surface structures. Sputter cones were first documented in the early forties by Glinterschultze and Tollmien (1), although the structure was only inferred rather than observed. In the past 15 years or so, sputter cones have received more attention, beginning with the work of Mazey, Nelson and Thackery, Nobes, Carter and Colligon, Stewart and Thompson and also Wehner and Haj icek (2–13). Since that time, dozens of qualitative and semi-quantitative observations have been made on these cone-like structures. Three recent review papers have described the development of the field in great detail (14–16).
