Experimental Stress Analysis

Abstract

The technical development of the last decade led in all countries to a large scale building programme of concrete roads, bridges as well as public and industrial buildings. This development imposed high requirements upon the designer, as well as on the construction firms. Irrespective of recent methods of computer aided design, it is still very necessary to check the quality of structures, verify their static and dynamic behaviour, carry out long term observations of strains in use, investigate various effects of loading, etc., and compare these experimental results with the assumption made by the designer. Introduction of new materials and structural form led to the development of in situ measurement techniques. The vibrating-wire method is a very progressive way of testing civil engineering structures in situ.
