Abstract
In USSR oats are a basic agricultural crop and the area under oats in the USSR constitutes over one-third of the world total. Oat breeding started at the end of last century and at the beginning it was based on the selection of the best aboriginal forms which represented a mixture of biotypes which had passed through evolution in different soil-climatic zones and were well adapted to local conditions. By selection of this material the varieties Shatilovski, Zolotoi and Khersonski, amongst others, were developed. The relative constancy of these varieties was preserved by purchasing seed from the originating sources where uniformity was maintained.
