Abstract

The ability to understand verbal messages is an exceptionally important dimension of human ability. All but a few severely damaged humans can use speech. At the same time there are substantial individual differences in the ability to respond to the nuances of verbal communication. What sorts of differences exist and how are they related to the general laws describing verbal comprehension ?
