Abstract
Water potential is defined as the measure of the free energy of water in a system compared with the free energy of pure water at the same temperature and pressure. Water potential is expressed in terms of the energy per unit mass (joules kg-1) or pressure (pascals) and is negative if the free energy is lower than that of pure water at the same temperature and pressure (1). Total water potential, ψ, is the sum of a number of components including matric potential, ψπ osmotic potential, ψτ, and pressure potential, ψp.
