Summary

The root/shoot ratio (cm root per g fresh matter of shoot) of nitrate deficient onion, spinach and corn plants was increased compared to plants grown with sufficient NO3 . Furthermore, at nitrate deficiency root density of onion plants was higher, whereas, it was lower for corn and spinach.

The maximum nitrate uptake rate of roots was enhanced upon slight nitrate starvation but not at strong shortage of nitrate supply. The nitrate uptake rate of roots of nitrate-starved plants increased with time after adding nitrate. A constant level uptake rate was attained later when the nitrate deficiency was more severe. Young plants grown in soil took up nitrate at about the maximal rate.
