Abstract

The knitwear industry occupies a significant place within the European textile industry. Employing 410,000 people in some 25,000 companies, four-fifths of them in italy, this sector contributes one eight of European textile production. In 1984, it consumed approximately 695,000 tonnes of yarn, while turnover currently stands at nearly 16,000 million ECU. Although Europe exports 2.5 times the amount of knitted fabric, by value, that it imports, there is a clear deficit in the balance of trade in finished articles. This loss outweighs the suplus on fabrics by 5 to 1. Consequently, all companies in the sector will need to observe the principles of creativity, productivity and quality.
